“The Journey”

 CALL TO ARTISTS

DEADLINE FEBRUARY 6, 2023

ART ON THE AVE NYC

*Application Form Below*

Show Title: The Journey

Using the work of local New York artists, we wish to spark a conversation about The Journey of African Americans- a journey that has required resistance and resilience.

What will the project look like?

Art on the Ave uses vacant storefronts in high visibility locations to create interactive art exhibitions for all to enjoy. Our next exhibition will be located at the Fulton Center Subway Station in lower Manhattan. Through its collaboration with Westfield, Art on the Ave NYC will transform vacant retail spaces in this transit hub into a showcase for local artists and a celebration of Black History.

We want to highlight aspects of African Americans’ journeys and responses in creating strong and hopeful communities. Therefore, it is up to the interpretation of the artist to decide how the work speaks to the theme.

Artists will be guided by this notion of “The Journey” - the idea that throughout history African-Americans have “resisted ongoing oppression and discrimination…to advocate for a dignified self-determined life in a just democratic society.” (Association for the Study of African-American Life and History)

Art has always been used as a powerful form of resistance against oppressive systems. We are looking for work that challenges racism while promoting and uplifting Black experiences, stories, and perspectives.

Fulton Center is a public space. We ask that artists be mindful of submitting work with overtly violent imagery or profanity.

This exhibition is curated by Aleathea Sapp-Jimenez. Aleathea is a Brooklyn-based artist, community activator, and cultural art director. She has been involved in the NYC art scene for over 30 years and has taught and mentored youth around the city. Aleathea’s own work has been exhibited extensively in Brooklyn and other boroughs, and she is the recipient of several awards including the National Service to Youth Award, the Boys & Girls Club of America Award, and the Borough President Citation Award.

Submissions should reflect, in a literal or symbolic way, our organizations’ values. Inclusivity, empathy, equity, growth, action, and activism are some of the key values that applicants can integrate.
We look at artist statements closely to ensure that they reflect the exhibition theme- The Journey
