Lance Johnson

About the Artist:

When Lance was 14 years old, his mother showed him a documentary called “I’ll Make Me A World.” It was a brilliant examination of African American art and an incredible collection of artists who I knew nothing about. It was there that I discovered the work of Romare Bearden. I was fascinated by the improvisation of his work, and I knew I wanted to create art with that sort of freedom. As a Hip Hop junkie, the grittiness and energy of his work made so much sense to me. As Jazz informs Bearden’s work, Hip Hop informs mine…a natural continuation of the rich legacy. A rich legacy of Dopeness.
