The Haircut
20x16

From the moment I saw these beautiful women in their long skirts, gold jewelry, flowers in their hair  standing in Rome’s Piazza del Popolo, I became intrigued with the Roma/Gypsy Culture. My  fascination was so strong, unwavering and fierce.

This subject has continued to inspire me for 35 years and counting.

“The Haircut” exhibited for this show is one of the families I’ve been documenting for over 20 years.  I know them well I watched their children grow up, and I have met their extended family. They are  entertainers, their platform is “Cirque Romanes”. Located in Paris, 16th arrondisement. They are  true entertainers; the entire family is part of the show. All children have a presence. Some have  learned a talent; others just stand upstage-still taking a part in the program. This photograph was  taken at their campsite, same place where the Big Tent is.

The show ends, and audience and artists mingle.

My Awakening came when I was invited to submit for the “Art on the Avenue” after a lengthy  hiatus, my inspiration was renewed. As well to open to people that have a curiosity in the  Roma/Gypsy lives.
