Artist Statement

Growing up in India, I started painting during my early childhood, inspired by color and vibrancy of local art and designs. There was never a time in my life when I was not painting or sketching. As an adult, I lived in Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, and have been inspired by the diverse cultures, people and art forms of these countries. My art work begins with a bright Acrylic or Oil background. Then, I either draw my subject or fill-in the negative area, adding layers of colors to create the final image. While the painting is very vibrant, I keep the number of colors very minimalistic and vibrant. It is an intuitive process. For me, the artwork is not about the destination, but about the journey, which begins with an idea and takes shape through serendipity of colors and strokes in one cohesive piece. It is an inner exploration of emotions on the canvas.

A city is made up of people. These people are the building bricks of the social fabric of the society. In the paintings I am submitting, I have tried to capture the people of New York City. We are all people of multiple races, cultures and colors. All of us together form the beautiful community that is diverse and beautiful.
