Jing (Ellen) Xu

I am an artist working with painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and installation. I was born and raised in Inner Mongolia, China. My work is heavily influenced by Chinese folk art, and I use labor-intensive and repetitive techniques to represent China's history and hardworking people. In my current art practice, I utilize various mediums, such as drawing, painting, and modeling clay, to delve into ideas related to time, space, reality, memory, and fantasy. I also critically examine and dismantle the roles I play in both private and public spheres. The installations and paintings I produce incorporate repetition and expansion as fundamental elements, which imbue them with a dynamic sense of movement and vitality. I think art is a process of creation to provoke thinking. I explore how our environment impacts our existence. My Chinese education has equipped me with a strong foundation in various mediums, which have become a part of me. My goal is to use my art to build community and inspire change. For me, art is not only a personal practice but also a tool for communication.
