Often referencing my identity, my artwork explores the nuances of growing up in between two cultures. In my piece, Rise Up, I show a pigeon soaring above the George Washington Bridge, similar to a rising Phoenix which represents hope. This illustration connects so many things that are very important to me: my culture and identity of both NYC & DR, my favorite bridge in all of New York City, and the hopes and stories of the many people who immigrated to this neighborhood. My brother and I are both Washington Heights natives and although he moved away, the culture of this neighborhood still runs through his blood so I asked him to write a poem for this piece to stretch out across the wings. We have such a profound connection to Washington Heights so I hope you enjoy reading the many stories of growing up here.
